The Role of the Lord-Lieutenant
The Dunbartonshire Lieutenancy represents an area that extends beyond the county lines of East and West Dunbartonshire; it encompasses the old historic county boundary of the 12th and 13th century and after the regional re-oganisation in 1996, includes areas that are now parts of North Lanarkshire and Argyll and Bute. It underlies the districts of Helensburgh and Lomond, Dumbarton, Bearsden and Milngavie, Strathkelvin, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and the South Lenzie/Waterside district ward of Chryston.
The Role of the Lord-Lieutenant
The King and his Government expect certain duties of Lord-Lieutenants which may broadly be classified under the following headings:
- Arrange visits by members of the Royal family and to escort Royal visitors.
- Present medals, awards and certain honours on behalf of His Majesty.
- Encourage and assess nominations for personal honour and for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
- Promote and support the Queen's Award for Enterprise.
- Support and liaise with local units of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army, Royal Air Force and their associated Reserves and Cadet Forces.
- Promote and support all forms of useful community and voluntary roles and groups.
How the Dunbartonshire Lieutenancy might help you
- The Lord-Lieutenant or one of her Deputy Lieutenants could visit your organisation to acknowledge the work being done and to share information on the wider role of the Lieutenancy.
- Advise on how you can nominate a friend or colleague for a national honour including help on the completion of the forms and supporting the nomination.
- Consider how your organisation might be included in a visit of a member of the Royal family.
- Give advice on procedures and nominations for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and the Queen's Award for Enterprise.
- 100th Birthdays and 60th Wedding Anniversary – arrange and attend to present The King's card of congratulations.
- Accept suggestions of individuals deserving recognition to attend the Royal Garden Party.
- Attend and preside over Citizenship Ceremonies to welcome new UK citizens resident in Dunbartonshire.
- Consider an invitation to attend an important milestone or event for your organisation and to help promote your work where appropriate.
- Celebrate and encourage volunteering, community service and the work of youth organisations.
