Dumbarton Denny Tank gets Transport Trust award

One of Dumbarton's most famous and popular attractions, the Denny Tank, has been awarded a National Transport Trust Red Wheel in recognition of its status.

The National Transport Trust promotes transport heritage across the UK and awards Red Wheel status to promote and educate people on the county’s rich and varied transport heritage, the equivalent of a ‘Blue Plaque’.

The Denny Ship Model Experimental Tank, Dumbarton is the world’s oldest working model experiment tank (1882) on the site of the William Denny Shipyard (1844 -1963), Dumbarton.

The tank, which is the length of a football pitch, was used in the development of a wide and varied range of vessels from Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock America’s Cup Challengers to the bulbous bow sections of the Canberra to the Denny Hovercraft.

In recognition of its importance to the UK’s maritime heritage the Trust awarded the museum a Red Wheel which was unveiled on Wednesday, 22March 2023 by Elliot Witherow DL, together with David Mann, CEO of Scottish Maritime Museum and Mike Lunch, Council member of National Transport Trust.
