Mince & tatties the key on Betty's 105th birthday

Friends and family joined in the celebrations for Betty Malcom’s 105^th birthday at the Fairview Court care home in Milngavie.

And the other residents were treated to a drink and a piece of birthday cake as the remarkable Betty marked her big day.

Betty was presented with a card of congratulations from the King and Queen by Dunbartonshire Deputy Lieutenant, Professor Elaine Boyd OBE.

She puts the secret to her sprightliness down to a regimen of going to go to bed early, eating mince and tatties as often as possible and watching Emmerdale.

Betty is so independent she even orders her own shopping online from her iPad.

She was born on 7^th October 1920 at New City road in Glasgow. Her parents were Hector and Christina and she had two brothers, Alexander and John. She spent most of her working life in different biscuit factories and also city bakeries.

During the war she worked in a munitions factory making bullets and she and her husband Alex had first hand experience of the conflict as they were in Clydebank during the blitz. Her hobbies were country dancing and knitting.

They wed in 1942 and were happily married for 72 years.

The couple had three children, Christine, Elizabeth, and Colin, nine grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Betty has lived at Fairview Court for the last 22 years.
