Battle of the Atlantic 80th anniversary marked

A veteran of the Battle of the Atlantic joined sons and daughters of those who served, to mark the 80th anniversary of the campaign in Helensburgh.

A church service at St Michael's and All Angels church was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the town's war memorial.

The principal guest was 98 year-old Dennis 'Spike' Jones who was a signaller aboard HMS Bermuda during the campaign.

The service was attended by Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Gill Aitkenhead MBE DL, whose father George was also a Battle of the Atlantic veteran, serving on the convoy escort corvette, HMS Honeysuckle. He was mentioned in dispatches.

Several people at the service wore their father's Atlantic Star, the decoration awarded to those served in the campaign.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest campaign of World War Two, running for virtually the entire six years of the conflict.
