Dumbarton marks Armed Forces Day

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Dumbarton for a parade marking Armed Forces Day on July 1st.

The Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Jill Young MBE took the salute outside the council offices in the town.

The parade, which was led by the Balaklava Pipes and Drums, was followed by a church service inside the council buildings.

There were around 150 marchers comprising serving military personnel from the Faslane submarine base, representatives from the cadets of all three services, serving Reservists and veterans.

In her address to the church service after the parade, Mrs Young said, 'We, as a nation, continue to be indebted to those who today risk their lives in many places around the world and to the Veterans whose service we will never forget and always honour.

I believe that the United Kingdom has the finest armed forces in the world who represent the very best that this country stands for. This is the day when the rest of us can show our patriotic support for their outstanding contribution to this country.

What we all recognise - and what links the generations - is that those who serve stand for honour and sacrifice; they put themselves after others; their country before self.

And that as we speak, these brave people are putting their lives on the line on the ground, in the air, and on the oceans - to keep us safe & build a better world for our children.

We must also remember that each one of our armed forces is also a loved one and a member of a family. They do not choose this vocation for an easy life, and the pressure on their families is considerable.

So, I want to thank all those who support their loved ones - through good times & bad.

There are many ways for people, communities and organisations to show their support for our Armed Forces Community - with their friends & family and importantly with Veterans who we thank - for your service, your sacrifice, your bravery & all you do.

And let’s not forget our Reservists who, time after time, have come to Britain’s aid by supporting the Regulars, and remain integral to the future of Britain’s Defence.

Nor should we forget the Cadets, or the adult volunteers who show them new skills, the virtue of commitment and the rewards of success as our youngsters prepare for life as responsible citizens.

On Armed Forces Day, let us salute the strong & the brave, men and women of our nation who are always there for us, guarding us and keeping us safe.
