D-Day 80 marked in Lieutenancy

The 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the beginning of the liberation of Europe in World War Two, was marked at a series of events across the Lieutenancy.

At a ceremony at the War Memorial in Old Kilpatrick, Maureen Cummings DL laid a wreath to remember those who lost their lives on June 6th 1944.

Later she lit the D-Day beacon at the commemorative ceremony in the Kilpatrick Hills at the request of the 1st Glen Lusset Scouts.

The lighting of the beacons was accompanied by the illumination of hundreds of lamps around the country, their flames representing the light of peace that emerges from the darkness of war.

After laying a wreath on behalf of King Charles at a ceremony at the war memorial in Hermitage Park in Helensburgh, Deputy Lieutenant Gill Aitkenhead MBE visited residents at the Waverley Court retirement housing complex in the town.

Residents and friends enjoyed a wartime lunch and sing-along at the event.

The event raised over £400 for the Erskine charity which supports military veterans and their families.
