Eightieth anniversary of VE Day marked

Events have been held throughout the Dunbartonshire Lieutenancy area to mark the eightieth anniversary of VE Day, the moment World War Two ended in Europe.

In 1945, Victory in Europe Day was marked by millions of people across Europe just hours after Nazi Germany surrendered and hostilities ended across the continent.

Dunbartonshire's Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Jill Young MBE attended two events on the day.

The first was a Remembrance event and wreath laying at the Cenotaph in Levengrove Park, Dumbarton.

Mrs Young later attended the Garelochead Support Trust, Military Veterans Community Charity.

She joined 50 veterans and their families, NHS staff and Royal Navy personnel for an 80th Celebration Brunch Party.

Waverley Court, a sheltered housing complex in Helensburgh, threw open their doors and issued an open invitation to a tea party organised by Liz, Gordon and Diane and their hardworking team of helpers, which was catered for and served by residents and staff alike.  And even they did not expect the 40 plus guests who came along. They were entertained to an afternoon of music and singing, led by the superb voice of Beth Streete accompanied by Bill on the accordion and Peter on the electric organ.

One of the guests was Deputy Lieutenant, Gill Aitkenhead MBE, who said she was honoured to attend the party, one of many she had attended over the years, and was sad to think that this will probably be the last time that she is a guest at Waverley Court as a Deputy Lieutenant because she retires from the Lieutenancy in November.

She wished all every happiness for the future.

In Torrance, the community held a service at the war memorial, followed by a tree planting at Torrance Primary School and a VE Day tea and cake in the church hall.

The events were attended by Deputy Lieutenant, Elliot Witherow and East Dunbartonshire Provost, Gillian Renwick.
