Frustrated by the volume of litter near the starting point of the West Highland Way, Dunbartonshire Deputy Lieutenant, Professor Elaine Boyd OBE, started a campaign which has seen schoolchildren design a new poster to raise awareness of the issue.

‘I’m often asked by walkers to take their photograph at the starting point and do my best to exclude litter from the pictures,’ said Elaine.
She challenged the pupils at Milngavie primary to design a poster to help raise awareness about the impact of litter in the village and pupils from P5 to P7 rose to the challenge. Elaine donated a book voucher for the overall winner.

‘Milngavie in Bloom do a wonderful job with their flower displays and litter disposal and I felt it would be good to involve the pupils at the school too,’ said Elaine.
After reviewing 50 entries, she chose the design by Elsie Faith from P 7 as the winner.

‘Elsie perfectly captured the benefits of good litter management and also the risks of littering and its impact on the environment, pets and wildlife,’ she said.
Jim MacVicar, who lives in Bearsden and is the owner of a printing business, produced the banner which has been placed at the start of the West Highland Way.

The banner will be left in the village until late December and then passed onto the school for display in their grounds.
Jim also gave Elsie copies of her poster to share with friends and family.
